Happily, albeit surprisingly, the previously temporary increase in size limits for single-storey rear extensions that fall within “permitted development” have actually now been made permanent!
So what does this mean for you? Well it's excellent news if you’re thinking of a single story extension for something like a kitchen, utility, additional living space, such as a playroom.
Prior notification is a process whereby you can build a single storey within certain size limits without planning permission, as long the neighbours have been consulted (neighbour consultation scheme) and do not have any objections the relevant Local Planning Authority is informed of the proposed work via a prior approval application.
With prior notification, detached properties may now built out to 8m and semi detached to 6m.
So if you didn’t get notification in by 30 May (the previous deadline for increased size limits), you don’t need to worry… you now have all the time in the world!
For more information on the (many) terms of permitted development, read our blog post HERE.
